General registration for the 101th running of everyone’s favorite float, booze, and pee (kind of) free road race, Bay to Breakers has opened today, announced organizers this morning.
Last year, the race previously known as a nutty free-for all of keg stands, open containers, and nudity imposed new rules on participants, banning consumption of alcohol and floats on the race course (remember the “sober tents”? I loved that!).
Organizers also added numerous port-a-potties to combat public urination issues reported at past races.
The changes apparently appealed to participants, 55,000 of whom, says Angela Fang, the race’s general manager, signed “up to become part of history” for the race’s 100th anniversary.
Race organizers say they plan on continuing “our zero tolerance stance on alcohol and floats,” this year, warning participants that “there will be multiple checkpoints on the race route to remove any floats and alcohol, so remember: Bring your shoes, not your booze.”
And you can run it just in shoes — Bay to Breakers spokesperson Sam Singer told the Appeal in 2010 that the race’s notorious nude runners wouldn’t be barred from participating, saying “come dressed or undressed!”
This year, say organizers, those dressed or undressed participants will also be able to run on behalf of a charity or cause they support. You can find more details on that program here.
This year’s race begins at 7 AM on Sunday, May 20, 2012. Race registration is limited to the first 50,000 runners, so register (you can do so here) sooner rather than later, as only registered participants will be allowed on the course. Gavin, I’m talking to you.
