Two men were arrested in San Francisco on New Year’s Eve after allegedly kidnapping a woman and leading police on a high-speed pursuit across the city, a police spokesman said Tuesday.
Jesus Duran, 28, and Javier Perez, 27, were arrested following an incident that began at about 2 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Seventh and Minna streets, police spokesman Sgt. Daryl Fong said.
A 26-year-old woman was walking along the street when Duran and Perez approached in a vehicle and asked for directions, Fong said.
The pair then grabbed the woman, forced her into the car and robbed her of her laptop, according to Fong.
After struggling with the suspects, the woman was able to break free and get out of the car a block away at Eighth and Minna streets and called police, Fong said.
Responding officers spotted the vehicle and tried to stop it, but as the suspects backed up in an attempt to flee, they struck a man in a wheelchair, causing minor injuries to his knee, Fong said.
The suspects’ vehicle then accelerated forward, narrowly missing a police officer who had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck, Fong said.
A pursuit ensued throughout several districts of the city, finally stopping at Naples Street and Peru Avenue in the Excelsior District after striking two parked cars, causing minor injuries to someone inside one of the vehicles, according to Fong.
Duran, the driver of the vehicle, was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, robbery, conspiracy, hit-and-run and resisting and evading police, Fong said.
Perez was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, robbery, conspiracy and resisting and evading police.
