There’s a forecast for snow in San Francisco tonight when Mayor Ed Lee and other city officials will celebrate the lighting of snowflake decorations on lampposts along Market Street.
The fourth-annual “Snowflakes on Market” ceremony marks the start of the lighting of 162 snowflake decorations along Market Street between today and mid-January to celebrate the holiday season.
The decorations are being placed on lampposts along a stretch of Market between Second and Seventh streets, but crews hope to hang them from all 232 lampposts along the thoroughfare in the years to come.
Twenty new snowflakes were added this year.
Along with the mayor, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission General Manager Ed Harrington and San Francisco Department of Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru are scheduled to attend this evening’s lighting ceremony.
It will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the cable car turnaround at Market and Powell streets.
The snowflake ceremony is not the city’s only holiday event this week.
On Friday, the 25th annual lighting of the Embarcadero Center buildings will be celebrated, with various children’s activities and live performances from “Disney on Ice presents Disney Pixar’s Toy Story 3” on the outdoor holiday rink at Embarcadero Center.
The festivities begin at 4 p.m. with a winter carnival, and the building lighting begins at 6 p.m.
