While it feels weird to call contemporary display advertising an “institution,” that brightly lit Yahoo billboard you see when you drive on 80 over 6th Street comes pretty close. However you describe it, according to SF Egotist, it’s going away at the end of the month.
Jon Charles, Vice President and General Sales Manager for Clear Channel Outdoor in San Francisco confirmed to the Egotist, “the Yahoo! board will be available starting in December 2011.”
The iconic billboard was erected over ten years ago, right around the time of the last dot-com boom. According to an interview with the ad agency folks responsible for the billboard, “it was always intended to be a landmark…San Francisco is losing what has turned into an icon.”
