muni_generic.jpgA man who died after being struck by a San Francisco Municipal Railway bus in the city's South of Market neighborhood on Sunday has been identified by the medical examiner's office as 71-year-old Manuel Tomaneng.

Tomaneng was struck by an outbound 14-Mission bus at Fifth and Mission streets at about 12:20 p.m. Sunday, Muni spokesman Paul Rose said.

The bus was just pulling away from a stop when Tomaneng apparently crossed the street in front of it, Rose said.

He was taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries later that day.

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency director Ed Reiskin said in a statement that the agency is offering its "deepest sympathy" to the family and friends of Tomaneng.

The bus driver has been placed on non-driving status as the crash is investigated, and will be tested for drugs and alcohol, as is standard Muni procedure.
