BikeLane.jpgIn honor of bike safety and daylight savings time being a giant sun-sucker, the SFMTA and SF Bike Coalition are starting their “Light Up The Night” campaign to provide free lights to those traveling on bike routes citywide.

Stations will be set up from 5-7 PM from Monday, November 14 and going all the way until Thursday, December 15. “The locations will be kept secret, to guarantee that the lights go to those who need them most”, the Bike Coalition says.

Volunteers at the stations will install the free front and rear bicycle lights, which are required by California law, which says that that riders must use a white front light and rear red light or reflector at night. The lights used must be visible from 300-feet.

Says SFMTA Director Ed Reiskin, “Distributing the lights directly to riders allows us to not only ensure that bicyclists get the word that being properly visible is the law, but also to inform more bicyclists about what they can do to be safer on the streets.”
