A collision involving a San Francisco Municipal Railway cable car and a minivan earlier this month was caused by the cable car, not the van, a Muni spokesman said today.
The crash was reported at 7:51 a.m. on Oct. 6 at the intersection of California Street and Grant Avenue, spokesman Paul Rose said.
Rose said the agency’s initial reports from the crash indicated that a cable car on the California Street line had been struck by the minivan. However, he said today that the cable car actually rear-ended the van.
Greg Scanlon, the driver of the minivan, said he was stopped at a red light at the intersection of California Street and Grant Avenue when he was struck from behind by the cable car.
Scanlon said it was raining at the time of the accident, and passengers on the cable car told him that the operator was trying to stop the car but was unable to in time.
No one was injured in the crash, which Scanlon said caused more than $5,500 in damage to his car.
Service was stopped on the California Street line for more than two hours because of the accident.
