A suspect who allegedly pointed a gun at police officers during a foot pursuit on Broadway in San Francisco early this morning has been identified as 20-year-old San Pablo resident Jesus Paredes Rodriguez.
Two bystanders were struck when officers fired at a fleeing subject seen conducting a drug deal early this morning in North Beach, San Francisco police said today.
The officers, who were on foot patrol, spotted a person they believed to be wanted by police around 2 a.m. on the 400 block of Broadway, said Lt. Troy Dangerfield.
As they approached Rodriguez, described as a 20-year-old Hispanic male, they saw him allegedly conduct a narcotics transaction, Dangerfield said.
When Rodriguez saw the officers approaching, he fled on foot south on Broadway. Rodriguez reached into his waistband and produced a semi-automatic pistol, which he allegedly pointed at the pursuing officers.
The officers fired, but did not hit Rodriguez. Instead, they struck two bystanders, a man and a woman.
The woman, who was hit in the thigh, was treated at San Francisco General Hospital and has been released, Dangerfield said. The man, who was struck in the lower leg, was still in the hospital as of this afternoon. Both their injuries were described as non-lifethreatening.
Rodriguez, who was uninjured in the shooting, was taken into custody at the scene and booked on weapons charges. Police also recovered his weapon, which was found to be fully loaded and functional.
Rodriguez did not fire his gun during the incident, Dangerfield said.
Police plan to hold a community meeting to share information about the shooting in the North Beach area on Monday, but have not yet set an exact time or location, Dangerfield said.
Police did not have information available about how many officers were involved in the shooting or how many rounds were fired.
