sfpd_arrestcuffs.jpgA man was beaten unconscious outside a college football game at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park on Saturday, two weeks after several instances of violence in and around the stadium during an NFL preseason game, police said.

The latest attack occurred at about 4 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot outside of the stadium near the start of a game between University of California at Berkeley and California State University, Fresno.

Officers responding to a report of a fight found a victim unconscious and bleeding with several witnesses pointing at another man and saying he was the attacker, according to police.

The witnesses said two groups of fans from the opposing teams were yelling back and forth at each other and a fight broke out, during which the victim was struck, police said.

The suspect allegedly admitted to the attack and was arrested. His name was not immediately available, an officer at the Bayview Police Station said today.

The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries that were serious but not considered life-threatening, the officer said.

Cal ended up defeating Fresno State 36-21 in the season opener for both teams.

Saturday’s attack came exactly two weeks after violence marred an Aug. 21 preseason game between the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders at Candlestick Park.

Two men were shot in the parking lot, while another man was beaten unconscious in a bathroom inside the stadium, according to police.

All three victims are expected to survive their injuries.

The violence prompted San Francisco police to increase their presence the following week at the 49ers’ next home preseason game, at which there was no violence reported.
