Iggnradog.jpgt’s always been free to park at Crissy Field, which began as a marsh and seasonal home of Ohlone Indians, later hosted Spanish and Mexican ships, and has been home to a Grand Prix raceway, an historic army airfield, and a U.S. Coast Guard station. Today it’s a park, natural area, and historic site enjoyed by locals and tourists alike — but next year, those locals and tourists might be paying to park there.

As the Ex reports, the GGNRA, a division of the National Park Service, is considering charging $1 per hour with a maximum price of $6 a day at Crissy Field’s West Bluff and Battery East parking lots.

In addition to freeing up spaces for park guests, the move could bring in $200,000 annually to spend on park improvements and shuttle service.

But Nancy Hornor, chief of planning for the GGNRA, tells the Ex the proposal isn’t about making money — she says the pay to park plan is intended to “ensure there is a conveniently located and adequate parking supply for park visitors,” and to discourage employees and visitors to nearby businesses from using the Crissy lots.

The rather large West Bluff parking lot is located near the Warming Hut, while Battery East is off Lincoln Blvd. Both lots make up 200 parking spaces.
