A man shot on the 800 block of Hampshire Street in the Mission District Tuesday night was pronounced dead on the scene, according to SFPD.
The 29-year-old victim, named by the Ex as Edson Lacayo of San Francisco, was shot three times at 11:29 PM Tuesday.
Police say that two male suspects were seen fleeing the area on foot, Mission Mission says, north on Hampshire.
Hampshire Street resident Beverly Chambers told the Chron that she called 911 after hearing the shots. By the time paramedics arrived, Lacayo “had passed away on the sidewalk in front of our small iron gate,” she said.
Police don’t know if this shooting was connected to, or retaliation for, an earlier homicide that killed local restaurant worker Gaspar Puch-tzek.
Though Puch-tzek was not affiliated with any gang, Mission Local reports that SFPD believe that it might have been a byproduct of the longstanding rivalry between the Norteno and SureƱo gangs, and that they expect retaliatory violence as a result.
As SF Weekly notes, Lacayo’s death marks San Francisco’s 34th homicide for 2011.
