Early this morning San Francisco police said they detained a suspect in Hayward whom they believe was driving a pickup truck that struck and seriously injured a boy late Thursday night in downtown San Francisco.
Hayward police stopped a white Toyota pickup truck, similar to the truck described in a hit-and-run accident at Mission and New Montgomery streets that seriously injured a 9-year-old boy around 10:30 p.m., San Francisco police said.
San Francisco police transported numerous witnesses to Hayward where they viewed and identified the truck as the one involved in the hit-and-run.
The driver was detained and the truck will be impounded as evidence, police said.
The boy remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
The nine-year-old had been walking ahead of a family member while crossing Mission Street when the suspect in the truck turned left onto Mission Street after driving north on New Montgomery Street, which is a one-way street with traffic only in the southbound direction, police said.
The truck did not stop after hitting the boy and continued driving west on Mission Street before colliding with numerous other cars parked and driving on the street. The suspect then drove onto a nearby freeway, police said.
