The man suspected of a gristly June homicide is expected to make his first appearance in SF court today to face murder and arson charges.
On June 10, firefighters responding to reports of a brush fire in Buena Vista Avenue East at about 4:40 a.m. found the burned body of Freddy Roberto Canul-Arguello, a much-loved employee of popular Mission restaurant Pi Bar.
Firefighters discovered Canul-Arguello’s partially burned body in a blue recycling bin near the park’s tennis courts just off of Buena Vista Avenue East.
Police said that Canul-Arguello, 23, was already dead when the fire began and that he was killed near the tennis courts earlier that morning.
After weeks of investigation led by, says the DA’s office, SF PD Inspector Dedet, David M. Diaz, 22, of San Francisco, was arrested for Canul-Arguello’s killing on July 22.
On Tuesday, District Attorney George Gascón announced that Diaz has been charged with one felony count of murder, one felony count of robbery, one felony count of
arson of a recycling bin, one felony count of mutilating/maiming/disfiguring a body, and one misdemeanor count of destruction of evidence. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday.
