9:06 PM: A man shot by San Francisco police in the Bayview District this afternoon has died, police said this evening.
The suspect, who was shot at Oakdale and Third streets at 4:45 p.m., was pronounced dead at 7 p.m., according to a police spokesman.
The shooting occurred when two uniformed officers were conducting a fare inspection on a Muni light rail vehicle. They detained a suspect on the platform, but he fled on foot.
During the foot pursuit, police say the suspect fired at the officers, and the officers fired back.
The officers were not injured.
The shooting is being investigated by the District Attorney’s Office and the Office of Citizen Complaints as well as by the police department.
In a written statement, District 10 Supervisor Malia Cohen said “My heart goes out to the family as they grieve the loss of their loved one.”
“Today’s shooting is under ongoing Police investigation, and I urge anyone with any information to notify SFPD immediately,” Cohen said. “I intend to review the results of the internal investigation from the Police Department to ensure Department protocol was followed.”

In a written statement, District 10 Supervisor Malia Cohen, who representa the area in which the shooting occurred, said that she “condemned violence in the community,” and urged “anyone with any information about the shooting to notify SFPD immediately.”
“Senseless violence will not be allowed to continue in our communities,” Cohen said “and we need your help to make changes that will ensure we live in safe and thriving neighborhoods.”
