A plan to rent street parking spaces to City CarShare for $150 a month to increase the visibility of car-sharing and “reduce private vehicle ownership rates” is moving forward, and will reportedly launch next month.
Initially, the SFMTA intended to remove spots at Polk and Greenwich, Taylor and Pacific, Harriet and Folsom, Valencia and 17th, and Clay and Fillmore from circulation, so City CarShare could park their vehicles there.
As Streetblog reports, the Board of Supes Tuesday approved changes to SF’s Transit code allowing this plan to move forward, and forward it shall move, beginning in mid-August and continuing for the next six months.
Only one spot from the MTA’s original plan was not approved, one at Union and Hyde, which neighbors complained about at a public hearing July 1.
Five more locations are also in development, including in Glen Park and Dogpatch after D10 Supervisor Malia Cohen complained that the southeast area wasn’t included in Monday’s Land Use and Economic Development Committee meeting. Now that’s how you rep a district.
If the program is deemed a success it could be expanded citywide and opened up to other car-sharing companies.
