James Crowell, the officer responsible for fatally shooting Charles Hill at the Civic Center BART station is planning on leaving the transit police force for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, his lawyer says.
According to the Ex, Crowell’s lawyer, Harry Stern, said the 18-month-veteran of the force referred to by his colleagues as a “newbie” “has been hired by the federal bureau and plans to join them soon.”
But Crowell might have to wait a while before he joins his colleagues Mulder, Scully, and Starling: the Chron reports today that Crowell’s not only taken back his recently-tendered resignation from BART but has had to put his plans on hold until the shooting probe concludes.
As previously reported, Crowell and Lee reportedly responded to a call that 45-year-old Charles Hill was on the Civic Center BART platform with an open bottle and intoxicated.
Surveillance video released by BART shows that less than a minute after arriving on the scene, a BART officer originally identified by the Bay Citizen as Crowell apparently opened fire on Hill, killing him.
None of this worries Stern, however, who told the Ex “There is no reason to believe that this completely justified use of force would impede (Crowell’s) transfer,” and told the Chron that “his client would still join the FBI after he is cleared of wrongdoing.”
