7:08 PM: Despite correcting a switching problem in San Francisco, Caltrain advises its passengers to expect continued delays this evening that were spurred by problems earlier today, a spokeswoman said.
Caltrain began experiencing problems with the switches this morning, and the problem continued intermittentently thoughout the day, spokeswoman Christine Dunn said.
As of 6:55 p.m., all trains coming into and out of San Francisco were expected to be delayed 15 to 30 minutes because of the earlier switching problem, she said.
The switches in the San Francisco train yard were back online, Dunn said just before 7 p.m. Before then, the switches were being operated by hand and only one train at a time could enter and leave the station at 4th and King streets.
Crews were still working to determine the cause of the problem, Dunn said.
BART and the San Mateo County Transit District are both honoring Caltrain tickets, Dunn said. Passengers can directly transfer between BART and Caltrain at Millbrae station.
Dunn said that travelers opting to take a bus could catch SamTrans routes 292 and 391, which depart from the Transbay Terminal and make stops on Mission Street.
