San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr is holding a community meeting Tuesday in the city’s Lower Haight neighborhood to discuss last week’s fatal officer-involved shooting near Buena Vista Park.
The meeting will be held at the Harvey Milk Recreational Arts Center and will focus on the fatal shooting of suspected Southern California bank robber Joshua Smith on the evening of June 7.
Smith, 25, was shot after allegedly trying to run over officers with a stolen car in the first block of Buena Vista Avenue East, police said. He was taken to a hospital where he died shortly afterward.
The recreational center, which overlooks Duboce Park, is just blocks from where the shooting took place.
San Francisco police officers had gone to the area of Buena Vista Park after being notified by the FBI that the stolen vehicle, a gray two-door BMW 3 series with dealer plates, had been tracked via GPS to the area.
When the officers tried to pull over the car and arrest Smith, he allegedly attempted to run them over with the car. The officers, fearing for their safety, opened fire on the man, striking him, police said.
The officers involved in the shooting have been put on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting, which is standard department procedure.
The community meeting with Suhr is scheduled to run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the center, located at 50 Scott St.
