House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius plan to visit San Francisco General Hospital today to highlight a federal program designed to make hospital care cheaper, safer and more reliable.
Pelosi, D-San Francisco, and Sebelius will join hospital officials, doctors, nurses, patients and health care advocates to promote the Partnership for Patients, a public-private partnership focused on preventing medical errors and improving transitions between health care settings.
The Obama Administration estimates the partnership, launched in April, will help save 60,000 lives by stopping preventable injuries and complications in health care, and has the potential to save up to $35 billion.
The partnership is supported by a $1 billion investment made possible by the Affordable Care Act approved by Congress last year.
The funding goes toward testing different models of improving patient care to reduce hospital-acquired medical conditions and funding community-based organizations that partner with hospitals to help patients transition from hospitals to other types of care.
The visit to San Francisco General Hospital, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. this morning, is the sixth in a series of visits to hospitals around the country to promote the partnership.
