gas_pumps.jpgAverage gas prices across the Bay Area dropped by double digits at the beginning of June compared to prices a month ago, according to the AAA, which monitors the rates.

Bay Area motorists can expect to pay $4.02 per gallon on average, compared to $4.32 in mid-May, AAA said.

The average price across the state is $3.94, down 32 cents from a month ago but up 96 cents from this time in 2010.

California has the sixth-highest gas prices in the country with only Alaska, Hawaii, Connecticut, Illinois and New York ranking above it, AAA said.

The most expensive gas in the Bay Area was found in San Francisco at $4.07 per gallon, according to AAA. The cheapest was in Santa Cruz at $3.87 per gallon.

Gas in San Mateo and San Rafael was at $4.02 per gallon and $4.01 per gallon, respectively.

Gas in Oakland and Pleasanton was at $3.98 per gallon, and at $3.95 per gallon in Santa Rosa.

Prices in Monterey and San Jose were $3.92 per gallon, while Vallejo clocked in at $3.88 per gallon.
