bart_generic.jpgBART officials are designating the last car of each train for the hundreds of fire personnel expected to ride the trains to and from today’s funeral for two fallen San Francisco firefighters.

Firefighters from across the West Coast are expected to attend this afternoon’s services for Lt. Vincent Perez and firefighter-paramedic Anthony Valerio.

The two men lost their lives after battling a blaze at a home in the Diamond Heights neighborhood on June 2.

A joint funeral service is scheduled for today at 12:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Cathedral at 1111 Gough St. After the funeral, the men will be buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma.

Fire personnel will be using the last cars of BART trains as a meeting point where mourners can gather to ride to and from the funeral service in fellowship, transit officials said.

BART is asking its customers and employees to extend sympathy and courtesy to the fire personnel on the trains.

“The dedication, bravery and selflessness of these two firefighters exemplify the very best in their profession,” said John McPartland, BART board vice president and retired Oakland Battalion Chief in a statement.
