fusion.jpgCould new SFPD chief Greg Suhr make any more overt political gestures? The man insists on leaving his door open, recently refused a $20,000 raise and turned his three assistants chiefs into deputy chiefs, saving the city $60,000. With a current savings of $80,000, it seems Suhr wants to go shopping, and boy does his team and he need a new ride.

As the Ex reports, like most SFians, Suhr isn’t down with pollution and definitely not into wasting cash on over $4-plus a gallon gas.

Because of this, Suhr says he’s doing away with the usual SUVs and Crown Victorias cops drive, instead opting for a sleek Ford Fusion Hybrid for himself and others in his “command staff.”

Compared to the 2010 Crown Victoria, the Ford Fusion Hybrid (which is also Mayor Ed Lee’s ride of choice) gets 20 more miles per gallon.

SFPD Lt. Troy Dangerfield sums up the decision with this obvious quote, “Gas is expensive and we have to pay for it too.”

A base model Fusion Hybrid is $19,820. Before you bring up Gavin Newsom’s non-local car purchase scandal, we can tell you that it appears from the Ford site that the car in question is not sold in San Francisco.

However, given that the Ex says SFPD doesn’t know how they’ll be paying for these new cars, maybe we’ll just have to cross that non-local purchase bridge when we get to it.
