A new farmers’ market is set to open Sunday in San Francisco’s Glen Park neighborhood after more than three years of work by the local merchants association.
The market, which will be held in the Glen Park BART station’s parking lot near the intersection of Bosworth and Diamond streets, will open at 10 a.m. Sunday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Supervisor Scott Wiener.
Ric Lopez, president of the Glen Park Merchants Association, said he has worked for the past three and a half years to get a farmers’ market in the area.
Lopez, who owns the nearby Modern Past clothing store on Chenery Street and has lived in the neighborhood for 11 years, said his father worked a lot with the civil rights activist and farm worker Cesar Chavez.
“That put the seed in my head–no pun intended–to have a farmers’ market here,” he said.
Lopez got the support of the merchants association and is partnering with the Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market Association and BART to start the market, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Sunday through mid- to late-October.
The market will sell certified organic produce and other items, all of which is locally grown and made, coming from less than 150 miles away, he said.
Lopez said “everyone is super, super excited” to have the farmers’ market in the area since the closest ones are a decent distance away in either the Noe Valley or Stonestown areas of the city.
He said he expects between 1,500 to 2,000 people to come to the market on a weekly basis.
