San Francisco police and fire dispatchers were forced to field information manually for more than two hours today after the computer-assisted system failed, a spokeswoman for the city’s Department of Emergency Management said.
The computer-aided dispatch system, or CAD system, failed at about 9:40 a.m., and dispatchers immediately reverted to the manual system to continue handling assignments, spokeswoman Laura Adleman said.
Dispatch and 911 service continued uninterrupted, and she emphasized, “There has been no impact on 911 services.”
A few hours later, the backup CAD system was put into place, and dispatchers were able to switch from manual mode to this backup system at about 1 p.m.
Although information technology staff were working with the system’s vendor this afternoon to make the needed repairs as soon as possible, there was no estimated time of when the main CAD system would be functional.
“That’s why we have the backup system and redundancies in place,” Adleman said.
