There’s lots of crime news on the Appeal today, from a bat attack in the Mission, a laptop sale gone awry, and a shooting in the Bayview. Here’s a roundup of the crime stories we found in other local publications today.
Cellphone thieves strike across San Francisco
A 28-year-old man was walking near the corner of Folsom and Cesar Chavez St. last Friday around 10:45pm when three men between the ages of 18 and 24 allegedly pistol-whipped the victim with a black handgun and stole his cellphone and laptop. The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries and was treated at SF General Hospital.
Cellphones were also allegedly stolen by three men Monday night on the 1500 block of Folsom St. at 1:50am. The victims, 24 and 29, were sitting in their car when the incident occurred. One suspect allegedly pistol-whipped one of the victims and took both of their cellphones before fleeing on foot. The victims were treated at Kaiser Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
A 22-year-old woman was walking near Haight and Fillmore St. at around 12:20am when two men approached her, asked for the time, then allegedly pushed her and stole her cellphone.
Later that day, a similar crime occurred at 9:45pm on the corner of Fillmore and McAllister St. Two men between the ages of 16 and 17 approached a woman and allegedly shoved her to the ground, then stole her phone.
On Sunday at 3am near Geary and Hyde St, another cellphone robbery took place. A black man between the ages of 20 and 25 approached a 22-year-old woman, asked her to make a call, then allegedly took her phone. The man allegedly kicked the victim when she asked for the phone back. He then fled in a gold GMC Envoy.
Thug takes woman’s phone, makes her pay to get it back
A 29-year-old woman was walking on the 1200 block of Market St at 3:20PM on Monday when a 23-year-old approached her and asked to borrow her phone. The woman complied but the suspect held onto the phone, saying “I’ll give your phone back only if you give me all your money.” The woman then complied and got her cellphone back.
Family of slain tourist returns to San Francisco with heavy hearts
It’s been eight months since German tourist Mechthild Schröer was killed and there may finally be progress on it. The case was delivered to the District Attorney almost a month ago, citing between two and five suspects involved. Says Interim Police Chief Jeff Godown, “We’re just waiting for the DA to decide if charges will be filed.”
Schröer was killed August 8 at Mason and Geary St. She and her husband had come to SF to celebrate her birthday and their wedding anniversary. The couple was deciding on where to go for dinner when a stray bullet struck and killed her. The shots fired were between a group of teenagers.
Schröer’s husband, Stefan, and his two sons returned to SF Sunday for a four-day trip. The Schröers embarked on honor Mechthild’s memory, thank the locals who’ve helped them so much, and learn more on why there have been no arrests in regards to the murder.
A German-speaking church will hold a memorial service for Mechthild on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the Schröers will take a walking tour through the city and visit Mechthild’s favorite SF attraction, the Golden Gate Bridge.
Man beaten in Golden Gate Park early-morning attack
A 33-year-old-man was knocked unconscious between midnight and 2am on Tuesday, apparently beaten to the point of memory loss. The crime occurred in Golden Gate Park by a suspect described as a white man in his 40s with a ponytail. The victim was treated at SF General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
This is the second such attack in the Park in recent days — on Thursday, two suspects allegedly pistol-whipped and stabbed a 50-year-old homeless man who was camping out in the park. The suspects then reportedly set fire to the man’s tent. The attack occurred near Transverse and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
