49ers.jpgThere’s been a lot of speculation on the financial impact a NFL players’ lockout might have on San Francisco’s strained finances. As the clock toward the season ticks down, it’s growing clearer that, especially in light of the money SF’s recently devoted to the team and the stadium, a lockout could really cost us.

Recently the Board of Supes agreed to give the 49ers a $3 million cash payment and to reduce the team’s rent by nearly $10 million over the course of five years.

At this juncture, the only way for SF’s Rec and Park to avoid losing as much as, the Ex reports, $3.5 million this year is through drastic ticket revenue increases and the dim possibility of having 10 games played at the park.

But without a football season, the 9ers don’t even have to pay rent, Chris Roberts says at Weekly.

“Obviously, we’re hoping that the NFL and the players association resolve their issues,” Rec and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg told the Ex. “If they do not, it is a significant hit in earned revenue.”

We’re scratching our heads trying to think of some other way Candlestick might be used to make money in the event of a lockout. But as the stadium barely even works for football, holding events or concerts at the park seem like a null venture.

With financial news like this and the downright rotten shape Candlestick is in, SFians and all 9er fans can’t wait for the park’s destruction, still at least a decade away.
