The Sunday Streets season kicked off this morning with an announcement by San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee at Chinatown’s Portsmouth Square.
Lee was announcing a new Sunday Streets route in the Chinatown and North Beach neighborhoods this summer. The date has not been announced.
The Chinatown and North Beach route will become the newest and eighth venue for the Sunday Streets car-free series, now in its fourth season.
Supervisor David Chiu, speaking at this morning’s news conference, stressed the importance of creating a safe environment for children living in two of the city’s densest neighborhoods.
The main purpose of Sunday Streets is to promote safety, exercise and car-free living, Lee said.
This month’s first Sunday Streets event will be held along the Embarcadero on March 20, and events will be held each month until October.
The family-friendly event is more than a street fair, Lee said.
“It’s a rethinking of how we can use San Francisco’s streets and alleyways,” Lee said.
The mayor also announced new hours for the monthly event, which will now begin at 11 a.m. to accommodate religious observers.
Each event has typically attracted more than 15,000 people, Lee said.
