State Of Emergency Declared For Four CA Counties After Tides Batter Coast
Gov. Jerry Brown issued a state of emergency in four counties across the state, including Santa Cruz and San Mateo, following an 8.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Japan and sent heightened ocean tides all the way to California.
The quake and ensuing tsunami on the northeast coast of Japan Thursday night has killed hundreds of people, and since then, waves have surged along the California coastline, capsizing boats and sending one man out to sea.
County agencies are now unlikely to manage the damage from the large waves by themselves, so Brown’s office declared the state of emergency, which also includes Del Norte and Humboldt counties, giving regional organizations the ability to pool resources, the declaration said.
Several boats in Santa Cruz Harbor got loose and were crashing around in the waves during this morning’s tsunami warning issued by the National Weather Service.
Two ended up capsizing while a sailboat crashed into a nearby bridge.
Harbor officials advised the public to evacuate the area.
The National Weather Service warning has since been downgraded to a tsunami advisory since the most dangerous conditions are believed to have passed.
