San Francisco police Chief Jeff Godown held a meeting with political and community leaders on Wednesday and is stepping up the police presence in the city’s Mission and Potrero Hill neighborhoods after a recent wave of violence.
There have been two fatal shootings and several other violent incidents in those two neighborhoods since Saturday. The most recent was a shooting on Wednesday that injured a man in the 2800 block of Harrison Street, near 24th Street, police Officer Albie Esparza said.
The victim in that shooting was taken to San Francisco General Hospital and is expected to survive, Esparza said.
Two men were killed on Saturday in apparent gang-related shootings.
Aldo Troncoso, 24, was fatally shot at about 2:25 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of 17th and Mission streets.
Then at about 7:40 p.m., Aldo Hernandez, 25, was found fatally shot in the driver’s seat of a car on Dakota Street near 23rd Street in the city’s Potrero Hill neighborhood, police said.
Another shooting and a stabbing occurred in the Mission District in the following days.
The Police Department’s gang task force is working all of these cases, some of which may be connected, Esparza said.
He said the police chief met with Supervisor David Campos, community leaders and the gang task force on Wednesday to discuss the problem.
Esparza said more officers are being sent to both neighborhoods.
“We’re reallocating resources to have more police presence in those neighborhoods where violence is increasing, to defuse or decrease any future violent outbreaks,” Esparza said.
