As our friends at the Ancient Order of Hibernians would be the first to tell you that what they refer to as “the commercial aspect” of the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day can result in “degrading or insulting depictions of…Irish ethnicity.” Dreadful! Even more dreadful, perhaps, is the number of people (regardless of ethnic heritage) who are expected to drive Thursday after glugging down too much “commercial aspect.” But with a local law firm covering free cab rides home on the holiday, drunk drivers have less of an excuse than ever to get behind the wheel.
From 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, through 3 a.m. on Friday, March 18 Veterans Cab (800-281-4488) is offering rides “free” home can be given from the East Bay to San Francisco, but not from San Francisco to the East Bay and Luxor Cab at (415- 282-4141) is giving “free” rides inside SF.
It’s all on Berg Injury Lawyers and their Safe and Sober Cab Ride Home program. When you call the cab company to get your ride home, you must tell them the ride is on Berg Injury Lawyers to ensure a free trip, but Berg will only cover $35 of the ride — if your ride costs more, it’s on you.
Rides will be provided from a bar or restaurant to an individual’s residence–not to other drinking locations, they say.
And, yes, cyclists who find themselves too tipsy to bike can take advantage of the service to get home, provided that your bike can fit in the trunk. According to a Berg spokesperson who confirmed that detail, cyclists “may need to remove the front wheels of their bikes or make other necessary modifications to ensure a proper fit in the cab.”
Due to the high number of requests on St. Patrick’s Day, they warn, rides can’t be guaranteed for everyone who calls; however, every attempt will be made to accommodate all requests. They also note that drivers have the right to use their discretion when accepting fares.
