Workers at a San Francisco recycling facility got a scare Monday afternoon when an object that appeared to be a smoke grenade was found on a conveyor belt, a police spokesman said today.
The suspicious device was reported at about 3:20 p.m. Monday at a Recology San Francisco recycling facility located at Pier 96 in the city’s Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood, police Officer Albie Esparza said.
A worker sorting through items on the conveyor belt noticed the device, and everyone was immediately evacuated from the facility, Esparza said.
Officers responded and secured the area until the Police Department’s bomb technicians arrived to examine the object, he said.
The device was eventually confiscated by the bomb technicians to be safely destroyed, Esparza said. He did not know whether it was a smoke grenade, a live explosive grenade, or a harmless replica.
No one was injured, and workers were allowed to return to the building once the device was taken away.
