A woman hit and killed by a truck Friday morning in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood has been identified as a 71-year-old resident of the city, the medical examiner’s office said.
Witnesses reported a truck hit Lourdes Richman at about 8:50 a.m. as she was crossing Second Street at Townsend Street in a crosswalk, San Francisco police Officer Albie Esparza said.
The mobile crane tractor truck had been traveling east on Townsend Street and was making a left-hand turn onto northbound Second Street when the vehicle struck the woman, Esparza said.
The San Francisco Fire Department’s headquarters are located right near the intersection, and firefighters were at the scene almost immediately, fire spokeswoman Lt. Mindy Talmadge said.
The woman was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where she died at 1:50 p.m., Esparza said.
The man driving the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. There was no evidence that drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident, but police were continuing to investigate, Esparza said.
The driver was “extremely distraught” by what happened, Talmadge said.
The company that owns the truck is Sheedy Drayage, which offers a variety of crane and rigging services, she said.
The fatal pedestrian crash was San Francisco’s second this week.
Aurora Venida, 87, was struck by a car at Geary and Arguello boulevards on Monday. She was taken to a hospital where she died on Wednesday, according to the medical examiner’s office.
