People are racing to buy spots in the centennial Bay to Breakers 12k run on May 15, event organizers said.
More than 41,000 participants have already signed up for 50,000 spaces reserved for runners and walkers, Bay to Breakers spokesman Sam Singer said.
If racers want to reach the finish line, this is the starting whistle to buy a spot before it’s too late, Singer said.
“Never before have this many people registered at this point in time in Bay to Breakers history,” Singer said.
Singer said he attributes the popularity of this year’s race to its 100th anniversary and the public’s approval of the new ban on floats and alcohol, which he said indicates that people want to enjoy the race in a safe and alcohol-free environment.
Runners will journey from every state and more than 38 different countries to participate in Bay to Breakers, according to race organizers.
The remaining 9,000 spots, which sell for $52 for adults and $47 for runners under 18 years old, are expected to sell before the end of March, Singer said.
It is unclear whether additional spots will be added if demand increases, and Singer said adding more spots is something that might be considered if the response is overwhelming.
