weathervane.jpgLocal residents should brace for high winds and possible flash floods today, as inclement weather pummels the Bay Area.

The California Highway Patrol has issued high wind advisories for the Bay Bridge, the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, and the San Rafael-Richmond Bridge, Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said

The CHP is advising motorists to be alert and to hold on to the wheel with both hands, Van Eckhardt said.

The National Weather Service is also saying that a flash flood watch is in effect for coastal areas of the Bay Area today.

The watch, which was initially issued Tuesday afternoon in response to heavy rain, continues through this afternoon, forecaster Will Pi said.

Rain is expected in the Bay Area this morning, and there is a slight chance of thunderstorms, the Service says, which may produce small hail in the afternoon.

Some streams and creeks could rise quickly, authorities warned. Localized flooding from runoff could occur if the soil is completely saturated.

“Keep monitoring the situation,” Pi advised residents of the watch areas. “Keep tuned to the news.”

Temperatures are expected to be in the 50s today, with southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph.

Showers are likely tonight, with a slight chance of thunderstorms in the evening and rain likely after midnight. Lows are expected to be in the upper 40s.

Thursday is expected to be breezy with a chance of rain and highs in the mid 50s, with south winds of 15 to 20 mph becoming 20 to 30 mph in the afternoon.
