shooting_nighttime.jpg3/15 9:21 AM: Five men were injured, one critically, in a shooting in San Francisco’s Mission District on Monday night, a police spokesman said.

The shooting was reported at about 11:05 p.m. Monday near the intersection of 16th Street and Rondel Place, less than a quarter-mile west of the 16th Street Mission BART station, police said.

Officers responded and found five men suffering from gunshot wounds. All five were taken to San Francisco General Hospital where four of them were in stable condition this morning, police Officer Albie Esparza.

The fifth victim, a 36-year-old man, suffered life-threatening injuries in the shooting, Esparza said.

No arrests have been made in the case, police said.

Police are seeking a later-model red Pontiac Trans Am believed to have been involved in the shooting, Esparza said.

The ground outside a nearby bar was littered with shell casings after the shooting, he said.

The shooting was the most recent case of violence in the Mission District, which has been plagued by a string of apparent gang-related incidents in recent weeks.

Police had stepped up patrols in the neighborhood in response to a wave of violence that included at least two stabbings and a number of shootings, two of which were fatal, in late February and early March.
