According to a press release sent by San Francisco’s Public Defender’s office, former SF Supervisor (among other things) Matt Gonzalez has been appointed their Chief Attorney, replacing Teresa Caffese, who stepped down last year.
Gonzalez has appeared in the news a few times since his run for mayor against Gavin Newsom in 2003. As SFist reminds us, he was Ralph Nader’s running mate during the 2008 presidential election, likes to make collages, founded SF’s “Free University” and, as recently as last week, was in talks to buy the DeSoto Cab Company.
Presumably, his new job which, according to SF Weekly, is the highest ranking non-elected position San Francisco Public Defender’s office, will require a bit more focus from Gonzalez that the past years have — according the the PD’s office, he’ll be “overseeing and managing all internal operations of the Public Defender’s office as well as participating in budget planning and negotiations.”
Gonzalez worked for the Public Defender’s office as a deputy public defender from 1991 to 2001, and was District 5’s SF supervisor from 2000-January 2005, after which he stepped down and started his own law practice, Gonzalez and Leigh.
