A woman who either fell under or was struck by a San Francisco Municipal Railway light rail vehicle in the city’s Mount Davidson Manor neighborhood last week is expected to survive, but was found to be at fault for the accident, a police spokesman said today.
The 67-year-old woman was reported at about 3:10 p.m. Thursday to be under a Muni vehicle at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and West Gate Drive, San Francisco police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said.
She was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries that were originally believed to be life-threatening, but Andraychak said today she is now expected to recover.
Authorities do not know whether the woman was struck by the Muni vehicle or if she fell underneath it while trying to run across the street.
“There’s no evidence on the front of the vehicle to indicate that she had touched the front end of it,” Andraychak said, adding that she was found with her legs under the front right part of the vehicle.
Investigators did determine from talking to witnesses that she had tried to cross the street against the signal when the accident occurred.
“One of the witnesses indicated he wasn’t sure if she was in the crosswalk or just outside it, but there was agreement that the train had the green light,” he said.
No one on the Muni vehicle, which was traveling west on the K/T-Ingleside/Third line, was injured in the accident.
