San Francisco police were trying today to determine what led up to the city’s first homicide of the year–a fatal shooting this afternoon in the Tenderloin neighborhood, a police spokesman said.

The victim and a suspect had been sitting on the sidewalk at the corner of Turk and Taylor streets at about 3:20 p.m. when the suspect shot the victim multiple times and ran, Officer Albie Esparza said.

The victim, a man in his 30s or 40s, was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he died from his injuries, Esparza said.

Police are still trying to determine what transpired prior to the shooting and are asking for any potential witness to come forward.

The suspect, who is still outstanding, was described only as a black man with a dark complexion, Esparza said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call (415) 575-4444 or text an anonymous tip to tip411.

The shooting was the city’s first homicide of the year, Esparza said.
