A man was fatally stabbed during a fight with another man in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood on Friday morning, a police spokesman said today. (Appeal commenters dispute the SFPD spokesperson’s nabe denotation, however, pointing out that the address is more Lower Haight than Hayes Valley.)

Police were called to an altercation, which was first reported by Haighteration, at about 10:50 a.m. near the intersection of Fillmore and Page streets, San Francisco police Officer Albie Esparza said.

A man in his early 50s wielding a shovel began to assault another man, who responded by stabbing the other man with a knife, Esparza said.

Both suspects were taken to a hospital where the man who was stabbed was later pronounced dead, according to Esparza.

The knife-wielding man, who is in his 40s, has been arrested but remained hospitalized as of this morning, Esparza said.

He said investigators are still trying to determine if the stabbing was a case of self-defense.

“I can’t speculate,” he said. “The matter is still under investigation.”

There were numerous witnesses to the fight who police hope will shed more light on what happened, Esparza said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Police Department’s homicide unit at (415) 553-1145 or the anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444. Tips can also be sent via text message to TIP411.
