It was December, 2009 when news first came to us of SF set-and-shot show called (at the time), “Facing Kate.”
The story of “a divorced San Francisco woman who leaves her job as a lawyer to become a mediator following the death of her dad, who headed a law firm,” it was set to air on USA…sometime.
Well, friends, that time has come! The show has been renamed — it’s now called “Fairly Legal,” (a rebrand the Chron terms “racy”), and is set to premiere this Thursday at 10.
Disappointingly, though at least some of the pilot was shot here, we weren’t able to hang on to the production — for the remainder of the show’s 10 episode run, the part of San Francisco will be played by, you guessed it, Vancouver.
Despite the switcheroo, the Chron says the show’s decided to promote itself in Union Square, Fisherman’s Wharf and Ghirardelli Square today, where shills will hand out, I am not making this up, grey cookies, because “Justice isn’t always black and white. A classic cookie in a shade of gray. Because for Kate Reed, life is never black and white.” Readers, any of you nab a grey cookie? What does an intentionally grey cookie taste like? I’m dying to know.
The trailer from the show’s embedded above, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on its chances. Maybe it’s just my disappointment (you know what they say about a San Franciscan scorned) at yet another show that opted not to shoot in SF, but Appeal pal Rain’s take feels right to me, when she fantasized “I just wish it was a show about a woman who quits being a lawyer to become a doctor who solves crimes.”
