The Palace of Fine Arts is reopening this morning after the completion of a years-long restoration process to the San Francisco landmark.
The reopening of the Palace of Fine Arts is being celebrated at an event this morning held by the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department and the Maybeck Foundation, a private group that partnered with the city on the $21 million restoration project.
The monument, built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, has required a few restorations over the decades, including the most recent one that started in 2004.
Crews repaired the palace’s dome, restored the nearby lagoon, seismically upgraded the site, and added new entrances and pathways, among other improvements.
More than 1,200 donors contributed to the restoration project, and many will be on hand at Friday’s celebration, which will feature music, refreshments, and a ceremonial cutting of the fence that surrounded the construction site.
The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the palace, located at the corner of Lyon Street and Marina Boulevard.
