San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is delaying his own swearing-in as the state’s lieutenant governor, but that didn’t stop him from swearing in five new appointments to various city boards and commissions this morning.
In a ceremony held on the mayor’s balcony at City Hall, Newsom swore in members of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s Board of Directors, Public Utilities Commission, Ethics Commission, Commission on the Environment, and Commission on the Status of Women.
Leona Bridges, who was sworn in as the new SFMTA board member, worked in the financial district and is a frequent rider of the 38-Geary bus.
Vince Courtney was sworn in as a new commissioner with the SFPUC. Courtney has served as executive director of the Laborers’ Community and Training Foundation, and on the San Francisco Labor Council and San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council.
Newsom also swore in Beverly Hayon to the Ethics Commission, Jason Elliott to the Commission on the Environment, and Lorna Randlett to the Commission on the Status of Women.
The mayor has pushed back the Jan. 3 date of his own swearing-in as lieutenant governor. He will be sworn in on Monday at the latest.
Newsom claims he did so because he has more to accomplish while in office, but progressives say Newsom simply wanted to prevent the current 11-member Board of Supervisors from appointing an interim mayor with a far-left political agenda.
Four new board members will take office on Saturday, and the board is expected to officially select the interim mayor this Tuesday, Newsom said.
