earthquake.jpgAt 4:10 PM today, at nearly the same time the SF Board of Supervisors agreed to endorse Ed Lee as interim SF Mayor in a vote of 10 for to 1 against (Daly, duh), the Bay Area was rocked by an South-Bay based earthquake with, says the USGS, a 4.1 preliminary magnitude. According to some, this is just the tip of the iceberg, with another quake predicted the day Gavin Newsom takes office as Lt. Governor.

The epicenter of this afternoon’s quake, the USGS says, was 13 miles east-southeast from San Jose, where it had a depth of 4.4 miles. According to SFist, thus far, no damage or injuries have been reported.

It was felt by Appeal readers around the area, here are some of their reports they IMed in:

From the Financial district, Katie Doze says “we’re on the 27th floor, and I felt a bump bump bump bump bump.”

From SoMa, Brock Keeling says “the house shook.”

Blaze says “I am in North Beach and I got about five seconds of jostling. Not huge, but enough.”

From Berkeley, John says he felt “pretty mild shaking, noises of things shifting but nothing fell off shelves.” he says that he checked with his daughter, at work in single-story building in Santa Clara, and she says neither she nor anyone else in her office felt it.

Via twitter, Hala Abdoun says “I (in SF’s Outer Sunset) felt the earthquake, 2 jolts but no one else around me felt it!”

I’m in the Outer Sunset, and I didn’t, either, so thank you guys for letting me know!

Sarah, in San Mateo, says “our building shook for about 2 seconds,” and said she felt “some swaying.”

Samantha comments “I am in the mission and I felt my floor shake for a few seconds,” and notes that notoriously iffy site Quake Predictionsays it’s most likely a foreshock for a Jan 10th earthquake.”

“Wait” you’re asking, “isn’t that the same day as Gavin Newsom’s inauguration party?” Yup.

For his part, a satirical twitter account for the soon-to-be interim mayor Lee announced “I just combed my moustache. You guys feel it?!?” I can’t believe he’s throwing his weight around already.

A few aftershocks have been reported in the same location, including one with a preliminary magnitude of 2.6, according to the USGS.

How about you, did you feel it? Let us know in the comments, but, first, let the USGS know, it’ll help them in their quake prediction research and is the right thing to do.
