police-light-bar1.jpgOakland police have arrested one man connected with a gun battle that injured another man and was witnessed by officers as it took place on Broadway near Oakland’s City Hall Plaza late Saturday night, a police spokesman said.

Around 11:15 p.m., officers witnessed two suspects moving on foot shooting at each other near the 1300 block of Broadway, though the incident spanned more than one block, Oakland police Officer J. Moore said.

“It’s a pretty big scene,” Moore said.

One of the people involved in the gunfire was taken into custody at the scene and a firearm was recovered, Moore said.

A second person was found a short distance away from the scene suffering from a gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition, Moore said.

Police are investigating the possibility that the injured person was the second suspect in the public gun battle, Moore said.

The wounded person is under guard at the hospital and an investigator will decide if and arrest will be made upon release from the hospital, Moore said.

Moore said there was a large crowd of civilians at the scene during and after the gunplay, but a police check with all local hospitals found no additional walk-ins of people that may have been injured in the shootout.

The exchange of fire on Broadway is not believed to be connected with a homicide in the 9000 block of International Boulevard that took place around 7 p.m. Saturday, Moore said.

Four people, both men and women, were also injured in the International Boulevard shooting and are in stable condition at a local hospital, Moore said.
