In a statement Sunday night, team President Jed York thanked Singletary "for the passion and effort that he brought to this organization."

"He is a tremendous person for whom I will always have great respect," York said.

Sunday afternoon's loss in St. Louis dropped the 49ers to 5-10 on the season. Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula was named interim coach for the remainder of the season.

Singletary called his tenure as 49ers coach "one of the greatest experiences of my life."

He singled out the players as "some of the most outstanding men I have ever been around in my life" and his coaching staff as "truly professionals."

"I wish the 49ers nothing but the best," he said.

While thanking the York family for the opportunity to coach the team, Singletary added, "I am also thankful for the faithful fans, I am just sorry I couldn't give them more."
