Drinks at Buck Tavern Are Now Bought From Outgoing Supe, Holder of Liquor License
Leave it to the eagle eyes over at Grub Street San Francisco to get the scoop — the foodie blog, doing God’s work scanning the public records, was the first to notice that outgoing Supervisor Chris Daly is now holder of the liquor license at 1655 Market Street, the present-day Buck Tavern.
Is Daly’s Dive back on? Other than it going to be called Buck Tavern for the immediate future, and other than Daly waiting for one signature out of the three needed on the title for the deal — there’s someone in Florida who holds a stake in the building, apparently — yes, it’s on.
“I’m in. I’m in, baby,” Daly told the Appeal on Thursday. “I am a San Francisco bar owner.”
Here’s the nitty and the gritty, in that order:
What killed the bar deal in October was a refusal from the current owner to commit to a lease beyond the two-year deal currently on the property. This refusal still stands, which means that Daly has now “shelved” his plans to remodel the property unless he gets a long-term lease.
If he doesn’t? “I’ll move,” he says. Daly’s Dive on Union Street? Make it so.
There are no plans to replace every libation in the joint with Canadian whisky, but since Canadian Club and its corn-fueled ilk are Daly’s favorite, it’s probably a good call (oh yeah double entendre).
Everyone Daly promised a free drink to during the initial media blitz is probably due two or three. Aim high, we say.
Exactly when the bar is officially Daly’s and his business partner’s waits only on the third signature, which could happen as early as “this afternoon,” Daly told us. “Or next week. Not tomorrow. But this year,” Christmas, you see. No business gets done on a holiday.
We’re going back to our Christmas shopping now, safe in the knowledge we don’t need to regift something we found in the back of our car in order to have booze money in January.
