Narrow Escape After Man Gets Leg Trapped Between BART, Platform

BART was experiencing major delays on Pittsburg/Bay Point trains because a man got his leg stuck between a train and the platform as he was getting off a train in Walnut Creek, a spokesman said.

The man's leg got stuck between the train and platform as he got off a train headed to Pittsburg/Bay Point in the Walnut Creek station at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, spokesman Linton Johnson said.

Johnson said officials didn't know why his leg was stuck, but an officer who witnessed the incident was able to tell the train operator to stop the train from leaving the station.

"I think that officer saved the man's life," Johnson said.

Crews helped pry the man free from the train and he was transported to a Kaiser center in Walnut Creek just after 6 p.m., a dispatcher at the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said. He said the man appeared to be in stable condition.

Service on Pittsburg/Bay Point trains experienced major delays of more than 15 minutes, Johnson said. Several trains turned around at the Walnut Creek station while the man was being freed.

Trains were running on time as of 6:40 p.m., a BART dispatcher said.
