The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.1 struck Tuesday evening in Santa Clara County.
According to the USGS, at 8:22 p.m. the temblor originating from the Calaveras Fault shook an area in the east foothills near the Calaveras Reservoir.
The quake, which had a depth of 4.8 miles, was centered about 5 miles northeast of Milpitas and 10 miles east-southeast of Fremont, according to the USGS.
In the past week, two other magnitude 2.0 or larger seismic events have occurred along this segment of the Calaveras Fault.
Monday night–almost exactly 24 hours before Tuesday night’s quake–a magnitude 2.1 quake rippled through the foothills from an area near Joseph D. Grant County Park.
On Friday, a magnitude 2.5 temblor occurred along a segment of the fault between the park and the reservoir.
