Officers responded to a report of a man in his 40s or 50s seen in the San Francisco Bay near Pier 41 at about 3:45 p.m., police spokesman Sgt. Michael Andraychak said. The U.S. Coast Guard initially said the man was seen near Pier 45.

Police tried to throw the man some sort of life preserver, which he did not take, Andraychak said.

He said the man was unconscious when police pulled him from the water and pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Police do not know why the man was in the water and his death is still being investigated.
