Nearly a week after Craigslist replaced the link to their “Adult Services” section with a black bar that read “censored,” cnet notes that Craigslist has removed even that small element of protest from its site.
Craigslist’s “services” section now flows smoothly from “pet” to “automotive” with no trace at all of the section devoted to sex work that once occupied the space between.
With the company facing attacks from all sides, from the hooker thing to the “Craigslist Murder” thing, to the continual whining of print media fetishists who claim that somehow the site killed newspapers (seriously, last week I heard someone say that on a journalism-related panel, which maybe serves me right for going to a journalism-related panel), one has to wonder if site founder Craig Newmark and CEO Jim Buckmaster are temped to say “fuck it” and walk away from their baby completely.
Is the the removal of the “adult services” section, and now the removal of their “censored” protest, a sign that they’re giving up? One can only speculate, as, as has been the case since the section went down last week, no one from Craigslist is talking to the media. Needless to say, if they do respond to us, we’ll be sure to let you know.
